Know whether someone is ready for their first management role — before you promote them.
A structured, evidence-based assessment for an existing employee being considered for their first people-management role. Deterministic scoring, a readiness profile across 9 competencies, and an auto-generated development plan — built for a real conversation, not a pass/fail verdict.
Being excellent at the job isn't the same as being ready to manage people who do it.
Most first-time managers are promoted because they were the strongest individual contributor — which tells you almost nothing about how they'll delegate, give difficult feedback, manage a former peer, or handle their first real conflict on the team.
The Manager Readiness Assessment adds structured evidence to that decision: how this specific person actually responds to realistic management situations, rated independently and scored against the same deterministic benchmark every time — not a personality test, and not a guess based on how good they are at their current job.
A promotion that doesn't land affects more than one person.
The new manager
Struggles through a transition they weren't given a fair chance to prepare for, often without realising which specific skills needed the most work first.
Their team
Feels the effects directly — unclear expectations, inconsistent decisions, or a former peer who hasn't adjusted to the new dynamic.
The organisation
Loses time and trust re-doing a transition that could have started with a clearer, more targeted development plan the first time.
The best individual contributor doesn't automatically make the best manager. Evidence tells you which is which.
Four steps from deciding to assess to a structured development conversation.
- 01
Set up the assessment
Add the participant, choose which of the 9 competencies are relevant, and pick an assessment length — from a 15-minute snapshot to a comprehensive assessment.
- 02
They complete it
A practice scenario first, then realistic management situations — rating possible actions independently, with no trick questions and no single 'correct' combination.
- 03
Review the readiness profile
See a competency-by-competency evidence breakdown, a First 90-Day Risk Profile, and an auto-generated development plan.
- 04
Have the conversation
Use the promotion interview guide and development plan as the basis for a real discussion — the decision and the timing stay with you.
Purpose-built for the individual-contributor-to-manager transition, not a relabelled seniority ladder.
Every competency has a plain-English definition, what good looks like, and separate indicators for emerging versus demonstrated evidence — authored and maintained by our assessment team, not generated on the fly.
From Doing to Leading
Whether someone can move from personally solving everything to creating conditions for others to succeed.
Delegation & Empowerment
Whether someone can delegate appropriately while maintaining accountability, not just hand off tasks.
Feedback & Difficult Conversations
Willingness and ability to address performance or behaviour issues constructively, not avoid them.
Fairness & Consistency
Whether someone can make balanced people decisions even when personal relationships are involved.
Coaching & Development
Whether someone helps people build capability rather than simply providing the answer.
Judgement & Accountability
Whether someone can make sensible management decisions and take responsibility for them.
Conflict & Team Dynamics
Ability to deal constructively with disagreement and interpersonal tension without making it worse.
Communication & Expectations
Whether someone can provide the clarity a team actually needs to act.
Self-Awareness & Management Mindset
Whether someone understands what management responsibility actually involves, not just its status.

Readiness summary
64
Ready, with development priorities4 of 9 assessed competencies shown.
First 90-day management risk profile
A preview of 3 of the 7 tracked moments.
The full report also includes an auto-generated development plan (why it matters, what good looks like, what to practise, a 30-day action) and a promotion interview guide — built from the assessment evidence, not a template with the name swapped in.
That's not a failed assessment — it's useful information delivered earlier than it usually arrives.
Most people considering their first management role have genuine development areas — that's normal, not a red flag. Every readiness band, including “Significant development recommended,” comes with the same structured development plan: specific priorities, why each one matters, what good looks like, and a concrete 30-day action to start closing the gap. The assessment is designed to make that conversation easier to have well, not to gatekeep who gets considered.
Built for internal development decisions, not recruitment.
Internal promotion decisions
A strong individual contributor is being considered for their first team-leader role. Get structured evidence on how they actually approach management situations, not just a gut read from how they perform in their current job.
Development programmes
Run the assessment at the start of a leadership-development cohort to identify real starting points per person, then use the development plan it produces as the basis for coaching or mentoring conversations.
Succession planning
Build an aggregate view of management readiness across a team or department — see where your bench is genuinely ready and where a development gap exists before a role actually opens up.
Pre-promotion readiness checks
Before confirming a promotion, use the assessment as one more source of structured evidence alongside performance history and manager input — never as the sole basis for the decision.
What's actually behind the report, not marketing claims about it.
Deterministic scoring, no AI decisions
Every score is a fixed, deterministic calculation — the same responses always produce the same result. No language model or generative AI decides a competency score, a readiness band, or what belongs in someone's development plan. The narrative summary and development content are built from a template and an admin-authored content bank, so every sentence in a report is traceable back to content our assessment team wrote and can review.
Evidence-gated, never a single-answer flag
Every competency score is shown alongside how much evidence actually supports it. The First 90-Day Risk Profile and Management Transition Risks sections only ever surface a signal once a real, counted share of responses supports it — never from one unusual answer. Scenarios move through an admin Draft → Review → Approved lifecycle, and any scenario can be retired or flagged for a fairness concern at any time.
Never a promotion verdict
The assessment never outputs a “promote” or “don't promote” label, and it never makes the decision automatically. Readiness bands describe where someone's evidence currently sits, not a verdict on their potential — the decision and its timing always stay with you.
Privacy and data
Assessment responses are used only to produce the readiness report for the organisation that invited the participant — never shared across organisations, never used to build a profile of the individual beyond this assessment. Access to full response detail is restricted within your own organisation to admin and owner roles.
Straight answers about what this is — and isn't.
- Does this decide who gets promoted?
- No. The assessment never labels anyone Ready or Not Ready as a verdict, and it never makes a promotion decision automatically. It produces a readiness profile and a development plan for you to use in a real conversation — the decision stays with you.
- Is any of this generated by AI?
- No. Scoring is a fixed, deterministic calculation — the same evidence always produces the same score. The narrative summary, development plan and interview questions are built from a template and an admin-authored content bank, not a language model deciding what to say about a specific person.
- What if someone isn't ready yet?
- That's a normal, useful outcome — most first-time-manager candidates have real development areas, and the report is built to say so constructively. "Significant development recommended" comes with the same structured development plan as any other band: what to work on, why it matters, and what to practise before revisiting the decision.
- Can we use this for someone who's already a manager?
- It's built specifically for the transition into a first people-management role — the competency framework and the First 90-Day Risk Profile are both framed around that transition. For an established manager, our situational-judgement assessment for hiring may be a better fit.
- How long does it take?
- Between 10 and 50 minutes depending on the depth tier you choose — a Snapshot (~12-15 scenarios), Standard (~25-35 scenarios, the recommended default), or Comprehensive (~45-60 scenarios) assessment.
- Does the participant see their own results?
- Not by default. You can choose to share a basic summary with them — either immediately or once the assessment is closed — but this is off by default and never includes the evidence detail or development plan your management team sees.
